In the coffee world, Honduras is often overshadowed by its neighbours, Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador. Why is this? On paper the reputation of Honduras should be up there with those countries, since it has the same conditions to produce very good coffees: high altitude, volcanic and fertile soils, an ideal climate and plenty of expertise. However, a lack of investment and inadequate infrastructure means top flight speciality coffees are harder to come by.
Finca Altos de Erapuca is a new coffee farm which was established in 2008. It used to be a cattle farm but, with an altitude of 1,300 to 1,360 meters above sea level, the owner recognised that the land had great potential for producing coffee. The farm is located in Copan, on the slopes of Honduras’s second highest mountain – Erapuca. The land is fertile with rich soils spanning 264 hectares of protected rainforest of which 24 hectares are planted with coffee.
The coffee grown here is exclusively the Catuai varietal. This is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra and is highly resistant to natural elements that coffee trees face at higher altitudes. It originated in Brazil but is now widely planted throughout Central America. This varietal is renouned for high acidity.A complex medium-bodied coffee with a buttery mouthfeel. We noted hints of orange and a caramel finish.
